Yeah...kinda depressing.... sorry. 
This picture actually coincides with a rant I have about Gothel (one which my sister refuses to listen to) but if you want here it is:
Gothel is as old as dirt. K? She's lived thru countless years of DEATH, PLAGUE, DEATH, and oh yeah DEATH!!! My theory is that everything about the song "Mother Knows Best" (i.e. the ruffians, thugs, poison ivy, quicksand, cannibles, snakes, plague... etc.) has probably been things she's encountered. Maybe her mother never told her all this. What if she had a family, and she lost them before she found the flower? What if she really did actually love Rapunzel, but the thought of dying was too much to let her leave? 
...
Or she could just be evil and senile... Yeah that could be it......
